If you have active moderate-to-severe UC, we are conducting a research study<\/span><\/p>\n

CHILDREN who require radiotherapy cancer treatment are being helped through the trauma by simple toy bricks.<\/p>\n

Glasgow\u2019s Beatson has been gifted 100 sets of bricks which when built, create a model of a linear accelerator machine<\/a>, which delivers radiotherapy treatment.<\/p>\n

Medics say the kits helps take the fear out of the treatment and encourages young patients to ask questions and raise any fears or concerns.<\/p>\n

After the treatment is over, children are encouraged to build something new as part of the transition to a \u2018normal\u2019 life.<\/p>\n

The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre (BWOSCC) is one of the first in Scotland to receive a donation of 100 models from The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) in York.<\/p>\n

Jill Scott, Superintendent Radiographer at the BWOSCC, said: \u201cThe little linac is a novel and fun way of showing children and their families what our treatment machines look like and demonstrates how the linac moves and works.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey also enable the children to play and talk about any concerns they may have regarding radiotherapy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u2018Little Linac\u2019 project was the brainchild of Professor David Brettle, Head of Medical Physics and Engineering at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cToy bricks are every child\u2019s favourite toy and are an ideal way to educate young patients about their treatment in a way that is designed to reduce their stress and anxiety, and so contribute to successful treatment sessions.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter their treatment is over, the challenge to the children is to use the bricks to make something very different: a rocket, a rabbit, a robot, as part of their transition back to a more normal life.\u201d<\/p>\n
