{"id":727,"date":"2022-02-10T16:47:18","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T16:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/radparts.com\/cpswp\/?p=727"},"modified":"2022-02-10T16:48:58","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T16:48:58","slug":"novel-cure-for-cancer-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radparts.com\/cpswp\/custom-articles\/novel-cure-for-cancer-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"Novel \u2018Cure\u2019 For Cancer Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-04390-6\">published in Nature<\/a> titled \u201cDecade-long leukemia remissions with persistence of CD4+\u00a0CAR T cells\u201d highlights a novel treatment called CAR T, which is being hailed as a \u201ccure\u201d for cancer by Dr. Carl June, the principal investigator for the trial at the University of Pennsylvania.<P><P><\/p>\n<p>June said, \u201cNow we can finally say the word \u2018cure\u2019 with CAR T cells.\u201d In 2010, when the trial began, the idea for this sort of therapy \u201cwas way out there,\u201d he added.<PP><\/p>\n<p>June and his colleagues reported that the CAR T therapy wiped out cancer in two out of the three initial early-trial patients, all of whom had chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Though the cancer disappeared, the CAR T cells stayed circulating through patients\u2019 bloodstreams, almost guarding the body against future attacks.<P><P><\/p>\n<p>In CAR T therapy, T cells (white blood cells that fight viruses) are removed from a patient\u2019s blood and re-introduced after being genetically engineered to fight cancer. Patients\u2019 T cells are taught to recognize and destroy B cells, a key player in cancer formation throughout the body. Without B cells \u2013 or cancer \u2013 patients require regularly-scheduled infusions of immunoglobulin infusions, which replenish antibodies.<P><P><\/p>\n<p>Many people with blood cancer have benefitted from CAR T therapy, which has proved especially effective against acute leukemia. Roughly a third of patients who underwent the CAR T therapy have gone into remission, but many patients later relapse.<P><P><\/p>\n<p>Dr. John F. DiPersio, chief of the division of oncology at Washington University in St. Louis, said, \u201cThe question is not only why some patients relapse or are resistant to therapy but why are some patients cured?\u201d<P><P><\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cOncologists don\u2019t use words like \u2018cure\u2019 lightly or easily or, frankly, very often,\u201d he said. \u201cI guarantee that it\u2019s not being used lightly.
